When people think of "animal issues," they tend to think first of the dogs and cats. Many animal charities, especially in Japan, focus on the rehoming of unwanted pets and the pursuing of no-kill policies. However, human society is supported by many other animals in much greater numbers than our pets. In this regard, it is unrealistic to think in terms of whether or not we love animals. Whether we like animals or not we are supported by a multitude of food animals, lab animals, and many more. Animal literacy is in fact the liberal arts view of the animal world. It means “to know the reality surrounding these animals.” Humans are ethically responsible for “knowing” what the animals that support our lives are experiencing. This is different from animal protection work, from humane activities, and it is simply the acquiring of truths pertaining to these animals in order to establish one’s stance. Where that stance would be depends on the individual human being, but one based on half-truths and false information would be meaningless. People working in the animal field tend to stress their own views. Animal literacy is knowing the actual facts. Hopefully, more people in the world will look towards becoming more and more “literate” in the field of human animal interrelations.
About Animal Literacy Research Institute
Animal Literacy Research Institute (ALRI) is a private think tank devoted to the dissemination of information pertaining to various facets of human animal interaction. Popular information concerning the human relationship to animals is often inaccurate or misrepresented. The words “animal therapy” is a good example of this. The words are widely known, but in reality they refer to the more accurate and professionally used terms animal assisted therapy and animal assisted activity. The popular term in itself is inaccurate and does not reflect the actual contents of the programs to which it supposedly points. There are also multiple certification programs in the field of human animal interrelations, but we are never sure how many of these programs are truly based on accurate and valid information. Animal Literacy Research Institute aims to bring internationally accepted standards and information to Japan in the hopes of enhancing the domestic knowledge base in order to encourage development in the field. The current domestic scene in Japan is such that everyone is vying for a chance to utter a unique phrase or concept in order to stand out as the pioneer. Animal Literacy Research Institute hopes to educate the public that there are internationally accepted truths that people must abide by. Japan is also behind in terms of public awareness of the reality in various fields pertaining to animals. Animal Literacy Research Institute aims to address this issue as well through the publication of articles, translation of pertinent materials, and the sponsoring of workshops.
